First bursting onto the statewideIllinoispolitical scene as the pollster and political director for Republican candidate for Secretary of State Al Salvi, McCulloch has been smack in the middle of most of the biggest political stories inIllinoisfor the past decade.
ManyIllinoispolitical observers believe McCulloch’s actions largely contributed to the political rise of then State Senator Barack Obama. By blowing the lid off of the divorce scandal involving Jack Ryan, Obama’s Republican opponent for the U.S. Senate, McCulloch’s actions forced Ryan off of the ballot, leading to a massive landslide victory for Obama in the 2004 general election. Obama’s overwhelming Senate victory catapulted him onto the national stage and into the White House.
McCulloch has worked for two current statewide officeholders, Governors Pat Quinn, a Democrat, and State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, a Republican.
In addition to the two current statewide officeholders, McCulloch boasts as current or former clients three current Illinois Congressman (Peter Roskam, Tim Johnson and Joe Walsh), three current Cook County Executive officeholders (Toni Preckwinkle, Maria Pappas and Dorothy Brown), five current Chicago Aldermen (Patrick O’Connor, Howard Brookins, Robert Fioretti, Carrie Austin, and Roberto Maldonado), half a dozen current Springfield legislators, eight sitting Cook County judges, and more than a dozen Chicago area Mayors or Village Presidents.
