Downers South wins, North falls in playoff opener

With the season on the line in Monday’s Class 4A Wheaton Warrenville South regional quarterfinal, Downers Grove South boys basketball couldn’t have been happy to see a 17-12 deficit at the end of the first quarter.
But that scenario hardly fazed the No. 13-seed Mustangs, who rallied for a 52-43 win over No. 20 Yorkville and moved on to face No. 4 seed West Aurora in a regional semifinal Tuesday night.
“We weathered the storm,” South coach Jay Baum said. “They scored 17 points in the first quarter but then we held them to 25 points the rest of the game. Our defense was key, and we got the ball inside on their 2-3 zone. It took a little bit of patience, but we didn’t want it to turn into a three-point shooting contest.”
South (15-11) made its move in the second quarter, holding the Foxes to five points and grabbing a 25-22 halftime lead. South maintained a 34-31 edge going into the fourth and pulled away late for the win.
The Mustangs had three players score in double figures. Robert Mara led the way with 17 points, nine coming at the free throw line, while Scott McNellis tallied 16. Jordan Cannon drained a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points.
Originally scheduled for Tuesday, Downers South will now face No. 5 West Aurora in a regional semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
