he Glen Ellyn Police Department has a new tool to address underage drinking.
Village trustees on June 20 unanimously approved an ordinance that makes it illegal for anyone under the age of 19 to be at an unsupervised gathering where other minors are unlawfully consuming or beginning to unlawfully consume alcohol. Violators face getting a ticket.
Trustee Dean Clark expressed doubt at how effective the new rules will be, although he voted to approve the measure.
“Will this reduce underage drinking or merely move it outside corporate limits?” he asked. “I’m uncomfortable with the ordinance but will reluctantly vote for it.”
