The Giants decided they couldn’t wait to jump all over Duke QB Daniel Jones with the sixth pick in the first round, but GM Dave Gettleman doesn’t seem like he’s in any hurry to get him on the field.
In a rambling post first round presser, Gettleman – flanked by head coach Pat Shurmur – gushed over Jones intangibles, but made the head scratching declaration that Eli Manning will indeed be the Giants quarterback this season. He added that Jones could sit up to as many as three years (!!!!!) behind Manning to learn the position, an eternity based on recently drafted QB learning curves.
Congratulations Giants fans, instead of having Josh Rosen to start the year, you get Eli and a project that might not see the field for three years. The biggest takeaway from this presser – aside from the Aaron Rodgers plan for Jones – is how subservient Gettleman and Shurmur appear to be to Eli, and how desperately they sought his approval of the pick. It’s really just weird and inexplicable at this point.
