In 2019, Julian Edelman is a Super Bowl MVP and one of the most prolific postseason receivers in NFL history, but in 2009 he was just trying to make the New England roster as a late round rookie wide receiver, recently converted from MAC option quarterback.
During one preseason game, Edelman grabbed Belichick’s attention with a punt return TD, providing a mic’d up Genius with the perfect opportunity to take a dry jab at then All-Pro Wes Welker, who was sidelined with an injury. Belichick told Welker that he was being “Wally Pipped” by Edelman, referring to the former Yankee first baseman who permanently lost his spot to Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig.
Strangely enough, Belichick’s off handed joking prediction proved to be true, since he eventually let Welker walk in favor of the younger, cheaper Edelman. Funny how things work out.
