It’s easy to get behind the mic for a winning team when the emotion of being in a pennant race can fuel your nightly broadcast. On the other hand, Orioles play by play announcer Gary Thorne has the impossible challenge of trying to keep things interesting for the 80 loss O’s who broke the AL record last night by giving up their 284th home run of the year.
The Yanks have crushed a nonsensical 52 home runs against Baltimore this season, alone, and after Gleybar Torres first inning shot Mr. Thorne sounded like a defeated man in utter disbelief. Things are so bad that Yanks broadcaster – and pinstripe legend – Paul O’Neil decided to come over to Thorne’s booth and playfully have a laugh at his expense for having to call yet another Bronx bomb. There were no hard feelings because the Orioles actually suck that bad.
Gary Thorne is a true pro, but another season of this and he might turn into Harry Doyle. No man should have to endure this.
