TAMPA, Fla. — The current “Democratic frontrunner” for Florida’s Governorship has found himself with little support from his own party, just weeks before Election Day.
Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.) was seen making an appearance at a protest against Moms For Liberty in Tampa this past weekend. Upon arrival, Crist joined protestors on the sidewalk to voice his support for abortion rights in Florida, while decrying Moms For Liberty’s stance on parental rights and freedom.
The protestors, who were repeatedly hurling insults at “Do-Nothing Democrats” proceeded to confront Crist, and yell at him for his inaction to codify Roe v. Wade into law.
Crist, faced with continued unrest, walked away from the protestors, bowing his hands and blowing them kisses as he entered a car and left the scene.
Jim Lewis, Democratic candidate for Attorney General of Florida, was also at the protest, and dealt with similar chides from prospective Democratic voters.
“They’re yelling at me right now,” Lewis said. “They’re yelling at the Democrats, in general, too, and I understand the frustration.”
Crist has yet to comment on the tense interaction, and looked rather weak as he witnessed his own party turn against him.
Protestors at the event chanted. “Abortion is a human right. Fight! Fight! Fight!” as they marched throughout downtown Tampa. They also consistently referred to Crist, Lewis, and the Democratic Party as “Do-Nothing Democrats.”
Crist is set to oppose Candace Daniel, Nikki Fried, and Robert Lee Willis in the August 23rd Democratic Primary. The winner of the four-way race will face off against incumbent Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the General Election.
Lewis is running against Aramis Ayala and Daniel Uhlfelder to become the Democratic nominee for Florida Attorney General. The winner of the three-way race will take on incumbent Florida Attorney General Ashley B. Moody in the General Election this November.
