28-year-old Russian Boxer Maxim Dadashev tragically died as the result of brain injuries sustained in his Friday night bout with Subriel Matias. According to the fight scorecards, the junior welterweight was hit with 319 punches until his trainer – and former IBF Welterweight Champ – Buddy McGirt decided to call the fight after the 11th round because of the punishment.
The video of McGirt telling Dadashev he’s stopping the fight is heartbreaking, because ultimately he’s trying to do the right thing, but his fighter refuses to quit. Sadly, McGirt was too late and Dadashev had already suffered the injuries that would ultimately kill him.
This video of Buddy McGirt urging Maxim Dadashev to stop fighting was hard to watch Friday, it’s even harder now. Heart-breaking. pic.twitter.com/BNjsdpJfle
